The Harbour City really is a haven for anybody who loves to be active as outdoor activities in Nanaimo are in abundance - so sport minded travellers and groups are naturally drawn to this area. Whatever adrenalin level you like to reach, the second largest city on Vancouver Island can get you there!
The coastal location and the mild Van Isle weather are just two of the reasons why outdoor activities in Nanaimo are so popular. From hiking to bungy jumping, and boating to scuba diving, there's always an excuse in this BC city to be enjoying the great outdoors!
Did you know that Nanaimo was the first location in North America to have a permanent and legal bungy jumping site? Bungy jumping is one of the more extreme outdoor activities in Nanaimo that travellers can enjoy, though if this sounds a little too extreme for you, don't worry the city has plenty more down to earth outdoor activities to try too!
There are many great opportunities to enjoy hiking in the Nanaimo area. Newcastle Island Provincial Marine Park for example, has some wonderful coastal scenery and features some beautiful trails through forests and along its coastline. Pack a tent and go backpacking around the island to really make the most of it. You can also explore this part of VI by boat. Canoeing, kayaking, boating and fishing are always popular outdoor activities in Nanaimo, plus there are excellent opportunities to enjoy cold water scuba diving too.
As if this wasn't enough, there are even more outdoor activities in Nanaimo you can try - how about mountain biking? Mount Benson offers some great biking trails including challenging ones for serious mountain bikers. Serious hikers will also enjoy the terrain up above the biking trails leading to the summit at 1000 metres (3,300 feet). There are also plenty more hiking and walking trails in addition to these in the Nanaimo area so you'll never get bored when visiting the Harbour City!
Another of the popular outdoor activities in Nanaimo is golfing. The mild Vancouver Island weather makes golfing possible throughout the year and you'll be able to enjoy some of British Columbia's best golf courses here. There are 15 golf courses all within an hour's drive of the city, so take your pick!
Speaking of sport minded travellers, it is no secret in these parts that the Painted Turtle Guesthouse is the #1 choice for team accommodation. Whether it is volleyball and basketball teams coming for tournaments at VIU, or synchronized swimming teams coming to compete in Nanaimo, or school groups coming to study our great landscape - PTG offers the best in group accommodation!
